B. The Joy of Not Knowing and why it's so good to not know! [Part 1] | Marcelo Staricoff | Workshop | Whole School | Classroom Culture, Metacognition and Lifelong Learning | The Joy of Not Knowing and why it's so good to not know! [Part 1]
This interactive session will introduce participants to the principles and practical strategies that underpin The Joy of Not Knowing (Routledge, 2021) approach- we will discuss and illustrate how these ideas can be used to create motivational cultures of learning where worry, anxiety and barriers to learning associated with 'not knowing' are replaced with a very special intrinsic motivation to want to engage, as students begin to realise that it is brilliant to not know as in order to learn anything new, by definition, we have to not know it first! The practical and demonstrations ideas will enable participants to build on current practice to create classrooms cultures that are rooted on metacognition, dis-metacognition (playfulness), values, children's rights, student agency, lifelong learning dispositions and that enable teachers of all phases to present the learning in a way that promotes creative, critical and philosophical thinking at all times of the day and across all subjects.

F. Why is time our enemy? Let's make it a mechanism for learning. | John Bray | Workshop | Whole School | Learning Environments / Wellbeing and Time / Problem solving for programme development. | Why is time our enemy? Let's make it a mechanism for learning.
If you knew there was a way to impact motivation, lower stress, embed skills and increase confidence in your students, would you do it? Students and teachers multitask a lot. Diverse projects and responsibilities pull them in various directions. Multitasking has a significant impact on productivity, and many educators can testify to the impact that exam stress and juggling deadlines have on students' mental health. This session advocates that schools need to be nimble and more flexible. Making time a tool rather than a constraint. By employing a sense of wonder, teachers and leaders will devise solutions for their own context, leaving this workshop with renewed motivation to advocate for better and practical ways to do so.

H. Character Education in the age of AI | Tom Duckling | Seminar | Whole School | Building in character education into curriculum development and learning design | Character Education in the age of AI
A curriculum is the what, how and when of a school and clearly a future curriculum needs to bridge the gap between tried and tested ducation, and preparing students for an uncertain future. To be clear, knowledge is still - and will - continue to be, incredibly valuable, but there will be a shift in our relationship with it. The foundational structure of the Western Education asserts there is a canon or body of knowledge that needs to be passed on. Recent curricula, whether the IB or project-based education, have moved slowly towards skill development, the promotion of competencies but now is the time to build an educational model that explicitly focuses on who we are in terms of character.

L. Design, Implementation and Impact of an Inquiry-Based Approach to Teaching Research Skills in Secondary | Rafael Angel | Seminar | Secondary | Research skills | Design, Implementation and Impact of an Inquiry-Based Approach to Teaching Research Skills in Secondary
Developing an intentional and explicit curriculum to teach research skills offers opportunities to consolidate the connections and relationships among different subject areas, especially language, humanities, and science. What is more, awareness of how research skills are strategically taught, informs decisions about the features of the learning that can be designed in different subjects and in different grades. In this session, the presenter will share the curriculum that has been designed to explicitly teach research skills at Bogaerts International School North Campus in Brussels. Likewise, participants will be involved in a series of engagements that exemplify the valued practices that are considered during the implementation of this curriculum. In this presentation, participants will also watch a couple of recordings of actual engagements, hence witnessing how students embraced the learning. By the end of this session, participants will be able to reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of implementing an intentional research skills curriculum, and should have insights that may support strategies to adopt similar approaches in their contexts.

N. Three Refreshing Approaches to Mathematical Word Problems (5-13 years) | Jean Knapp | Workshop | Primary | Mathematics | Three Refreshing Approaches to Mathematical Word Problems (5-13 years)
During lockdown I continued my research and collaboration with others re making word problems fun and decipherable! Later, this was trialled on samples of children with impressive outcomes. This session looks at using the approaches; sketchy information, goal free and more/same/less to understand, delve deeper (with variation) and allow children to have ownership and play with a problem as a means to understand it. This is a practical session with lots of opportunities to try out and discuss. This session is for all levels of teacher who want to look at word problems a little differently!

C. Carbon Literacy and Sustainability Planning for schools: What it is and why all schools need to be doing it | John Sutton | Seminar | Whole School | Sustainability | Carbon Literacy and Sustainability Planning for schools: What it is and why all schools need to be doing it
Slightly different as it's not necessarily classroom focused - although I will touch on what Carbon Literacy in the classroom looks like and will provide links to resources, session plans etc. The focus will be on the carbon footprint of education and why schools need to take steps to reduce it as a matter of urgency. This will be placed in the context of global policy and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Delegates will be asked to calculate the carbon footprint of their journey to PracPed and offered ideas on how to mitigate this (if interested, once you have an idea of numbers I'd be keen on having a bash at calculating the carbon footprint of travel to the conference and find a sponsor willing to mitigate it) There will also be a section on sustainability planning in school, although this could be delivered as an entirely separate workshop. The idea is to offer delegates something a bit different and highlight the fact that schools need to think well beyond the curriculum when it comes to sustainability.

D. "The same year 31 times?": reflections on a career in (and out of) the geography classroom. | Alan Parkinson | Seminar | Whole School | Geography / Curriculum making / Pedagogical longevity | "The same year 31 times?": reflections on a career in (and out of) the geography classroom.
When someone says they've been teaching ten years the riposte is "yes, but you just did the same year ten times". Geographers have a 'problem' in this regard: the world doesn't stand still and the subject requires constant reevaluation. I will reflect on a long career working in prep and secondary schools, at the Open University and for the Geographical Association. Alongside this, I've written a huge range of resources and worked on projects with prestigious universities and organisations, and across Europe on ERASMUS projects. I run ten blogs and have won awards for my resources and support of colleagues. You'll take away ideas, resources, inspiration and some tips for your own pedagogical longevity and curriculum making and some sneak peaks of the projects I'm currently working on. Stay curious and excited about the potential of geography, but don't feel you need to be a geographer to take something from the session.
Session Leader: Alan Parkinson
Head of Geography at King's Ely Prep. Author and freelance consultant. Geographical Assocation President 2021-22. D. Remaining human as an educator: harnessing relationships, self-reflection and story to keep hope alive | Jonny Walker | Workshop | Whole School | Social learning, wellbeing, literacy, mythology | Remaining human as an educator: harnessing relationships, self-reflection and story to keep hope alive
A practical and reflective workshop which explores the human dimension that sits beneath our teaching - social connection, self-reflection and the emotional lives of teachers and students that entwine in our classrooms. Activities and questions will guide us to consider how our selves as people and our selves as teachers intersect, and what this means for the learning that goes on in our classes. We will explore the role that active listening plays, and consider why focusing on the social dimensions of our classrooms can support students and teachers to remain critically optimistic and buoyant in these turbulent times. Practical, reflective, uplifting.
Session Leader: Jonny Walker
I write and teach about writing and teaching. My interests are at the intersection between mythology, childhood, poetry, writing and nature.
I work across state schools in the UK (mostly East London primaries) and in India. My two main ventures are The Iliad Project and the Poetry Retreat. The Iliad Project is a six-session project that uses drama, text-study, history, philosophy and self-inquiry to explore Greek mythology and the events of the Trojan War.
The Poetry Retreat is an ambitious residential writing retreat that I run with a poet named Adisa, in which we take a group of children and teachers from five different urban schools, and we 'retreat' out to the New Forest each year. This project has been running annually since 2016.
I facilitate teacher CPD on the topics of relationally-rich teaching, creative writing and the benefits of harnessing mythology in the primary and middle-school classroom.
I am a qualified primary teacher, having taught at Elmhurst Primary School in East London between 2011 and 2016, and been Assistant Head at Park Primary until I went freelance in 2019. My freelance work in education is under the banner of my organisational title OtherWise Education - www.otherwiseeducation.com

I. How Epistemic Inquiry can help plan a science curriculum. | Alex Black | Workshop | Whole School | Science | How Epistemic Inquiry can help plan a science curriculum.
The concept of Epistemic Inquiry was inspired by and is a fusion of the lesson methodology of C.A.S.E and the ideas of Derek Hodson (2014) where he proposes a science curriculum should involve students “Learning Science, Learning about Science, Doing Science”. The big questions of Osborne and Kind (2016) “What exists? How do things happen? How do we come to Know? What should we do with this knowledge? The workshop shows how this fusion can be a key planning framework for a science curriculum. These ideas will be illustrated by an interactive lesson simulation, where participants can understand how dialogic practices can use cognitive conflict and the critical engagement with different explanatory models of simple freezing and melting phenomena. The final discussion will explore how these ideas can be applied in other curricular contexts.

H. Exiting our Echo Chambers | Michael Dunn | Workshop | Whole School | Critical thinking (via TOK) | Exiting our Echo Chambers
Few educators would deny that critical thinking is one of the most important skills that we're trying to develop in our students. In this workshop, drawing on my years as a TOK teacher, I'll offer you my (very simple!) definition, discuss how all subject teachers can contribute to its growth, and suggest ways that the students themselves can measure their progress in becoming 'authentic' critical thinkers - ultimately enabling them to exit their echo chambers!

A. AI for accessibility and inclusion | Miles Berry | Workshop | Whole School | Computing, inclusion | AI for accessibility and inclusion
Vygotsky saw learning as taking place in a 'zone of proximal development', where what a child could do with support from a 'more knowledgeable other' today, would become what they could do independently tomorrow. Prof Berry presents AI as potentially taking on the role of the more knowledgeable other, particularly for learners who might normally struggle to access the curriculum. He offers some insights into how pupils can learn about the concepts on which AI is built, and then explores some practical ways in which free tools can support pupils with the language demands of the school curriculum, from text to speech and speech to text tools, through machine translation to the potential of ChatGPT and generative AI tools. He concludes with some thoughts on the ethical and long term implications of these technologies.

C. Bottoms Up! Create inclusive learning environments by writing objectives for Special Educational Needs (SEN) students | Ricardo Martinez | Seminar | Whole School | Differentiation | Bottoms Up! Create inclusive learning environments by writing objectives for Special Educational Needs (SEN) students
Most secondary teachers “teach to the top third” and scaffold down to meet the needs of low-level learners and students with Special Education Needs. I will showcase a “bottoms up!” pedagogical approach to keep expectations high and promote inclusion within the learning environment. Top-Down planning treats special education students as burdens that must be accounted for, not as learners in need of targeted planning. Teachers will learn to create inclusive learning environments by tailoring their objectives to meet the specific needs of low-level learners and/or students with SEN.
Session Leader: Ricardo Martinez

For 15 years, I have provided secondary school learners with inclusive, individualized, and multi-media learning environments throughout culturally diverse, multilingual, and international settings from San Francisco to New York City, and from the Bodensee to the Rhineland. I have a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from the University of Southern California, a secondary school Social Science teaching credential from the State of California with certification to teach English learners, and Bachelor of Arts degrees in both History and Journalism from San Francisco State University. D. Using the Appliance of Science (and other Knowledge!) to Improve Learning Outcomes | Andy Chaplin | Seminar | Whole School | Project work, cross-curricular teaching | Using the Appliance of Science (and other Knowledge!) to Improve Learning Outcomes
Although the use of project work continues to increase, there is still a reluctance to integrate different subjects directly into one learning experience. This seminar will demonstrate an example which requires a minimum of coordination whereby learners will apply knowledge from different subjects to create an individual physical device that can provide ongoing results for future analysis and learning. A strategy will be demonstrated which allow a core project to be used by teachers at different stages within the school, and provides options for differing access to resources ranging from simple handwork tools up to 3d printers, laser cutters, and milling machines.

E. Small Changes make Big Differences (co-presenters: Josh Smith and David Markland) | Mat Barnsley | Workshop | Whole School | Teaching techniques/ Fire lighting | Small Changes make Big Differences (co-presenters: Josh Smith and David Markland)
The Teachers will be split into 3 teams and learn how to make fire in an incredible way using a fire steel! (an outdoor space that can not be set on fire is needed such as a car park or school field with green grass). Up to 90 teachers can do this activity at one time. This CPD is designed to help teachers identify some things that they are doing in the classroom that could be “cut out” or removed from their practice to make it better. It will prove to them the impacts that some un-needed habits can have on the students at school and hopefully this activity will have a lasting effect on them and their practice in the classroom. They will also learn a life saving technique and have a LOT of fun.

C. The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth - Accommodating introverts in your classroom | Josh Moore | Seminar | Whole School | All subjects / Teaching strategies / Inclusion | The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth - Accommodating introverts in your classroom
Undeniably, a fundamental aim of teaching is to ensure that all students are able to engage with the learning activities delivered by the teacher. And yet, many strategies and activities that are praised as being "good teaching" often fail to consider a significant number of our learners - specifically, the introverts. The session will cover some of the myths that surround introversion and the reasons why these students needs to be encouraged and praised just as much as their more vocal extroverted peers. We will consider practical strategies to ensure that introverted learners are included in our teaching, from how we question, to how we deliver feedback. To conclude we will also consider how this new understanding even influences how we interact with our fellow teaching colleagues.

K. Reading and Writing Floats on a Sea of Talk'
(Britton, 1976)
| Alka Townend | Workshop | Primary | Talk Pedagogy and Literacy | Reading and Writing Floats on a Sea of Talk'
(Britton, 1976)
- Dialogue is going on every day in our classrooms but is it structured to maximise the most out of talk? - Are you aware of the different types of pedagogical talk that can be planned adaptively according to the needs of your pupils? - Are you able to confidently plan a lesson based solely on talk and assess pupil progression and outcomes? In this session, Alka will aim to answer these questions and will start with some advice on creating a supportive environment for talk in your classrooms. In doing so, you will discover that by building a dialogic classroom, you will start to establish a talk culture with your pupils enabling them to engage in productive learning which promotes their natural curiosity. During the session, Alka will model a sequence of lessons using children's literature as a stimulus for talk activities, leading to a final writing activity. The introduced lesson sequence can be adapted across age ranges and for a range of texts.

G. Providing Fresh Air Futures: Assessable outdoor learning curriculum ideas for all. | Calum Wright | Workshop | Whole School | Outdoor Learning, Sustainaibility Education | Providing Fresh Air Futures: Assessable outdoor learning curriculum ideas for all.
The ideas presented will be evidence based and have been refined through three years of trying and reflecting on lessons I have delivered as part of my role. I also come with a classroom teacher perspective, understanding the challenges and pressures faced by classroom teachers. I therefore, offer solutions to common challenges and provide ideas that can be taught in the most basic playground environments. My presentation style is relaxed and fun. The propossed format is a prior knowledge share (mentimeter) - presentation of ideas and examples (slides and props) - an active creative task with resources (task cards differented to different year group levels and allowing personalisation and choice) - a fun practicle, reflection checkout.
